On Sunday, June 1, 1817, just three months after his inauguration as fifth president, fifty-nine year old James Monroe and a small entourage embarked on a tour of the northern states with two goals: inspection of military defenses and national unity. Stops in Putnam and Zanesville were included. A reenactment of the Tour of Northern States will take place this summer as part of its bicentennial commemoration. Muskingum County History will host the stop in Zanesville, August 30-31. Details will be announced soon.
